Sunday, October 8, 2017, 8:00 AM

Start: Ranch Headquarters 5036 S. Hy 85
Leaders:  Koch / Brown / McKinney /  Michalski
Rating: Moderate – 2.5 mi. off trail hike (Approx. 3.5 hours)

This is a long hike to the petrified-forest. Walk among the sand bars of an ancient river. Learn how trees become petrified, whilevisiting a unique geologic treasure of Cherokee. Learn how many humans throughout history have used the petrified wood to craft tools and buildings.

Moderate:  These hikes are between 1and 3 miles and include some steep off-trail hiking.  These hikes are suitable for most people in good physical condition.  Moderate hikes often follow primitive trails with limited elevation gains.  We recommend good hiking shoes and long pants.

All hikes require shoes that protect your feet.  We do not allow hiking in sandals or shoes that do not cover your feet.  We recommend a minimum of 1 liter of water for every 2 hours of hiking.  Most hikes are in open meadows and exposed slopes; so all participants should wear sunscreen.  Snacks are recommended for any hike over two hours.
