Spirit of adventure: Mountain winds, clouds, and flying through the worst of it (Saturday event)
The National Center for Atmospheric Research invites you to join us for the final lecture in the 2017 NCAR Explorer Series: On November 11th, get the inside scoop on mountain winds and clouds, with NCAR's Scientist Vanda Grubišić. 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Our hands-on exhibits about weather, climate, and the Sun-Earth connection will be open for viewing before the talk (staff will be on hand to answer your questions) 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Talk by Vanda Grubišić: "Spirit of adventure: Mountain winds, clouds, and flying through the worst of it" 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Questions & conversations Talk Description: Ever wondered why it is so windy in Boulder? Or why it gets bumpy flying over and downwind of the Rocky Mountains? Come and learn the how and why of mountain weather, winds, and clouds — and what it’s like to take those bumpy rides for science. Mountains exert a strong influence on the atmosphere, affecting nearby weather and generating their own climate. To learn how and why some of the strongest winds on Earth form, scientists have long used gliders, powered aircraft, and other research platforms to collect data in very strong wind and turbulence conditions generated by airflow over mountains. Dr. Vanda Grubišić will share her love of mountain meteorology and where it’s taken her. Admission is free, however seating is limited. In order to ensure a seat in the lecture hall, please obtain a free Evenbrite ticket. A sign language interpreter will be present at the lecture. If there are no tickets remaining, we encourage you to sign up for an overflow ticket. It is very likely that those with overflow tickets will be able to see the talk in the main seminar room. If there is not enough room, we will provide another space where you will be able to watch a live feed of the talk. Fore more information, visit the NCAR Explorer Series Website.
