Try Coding Weekend: Intro to Back-end and Front-end Engineering

Join the Turing School for one weekend and get a crash course in the basics of coding and learn how you can use technology to solve problems and impact change. Schedule:  Saturday October 26th: 10:00 am - 4:30 pm Sunday October 27th:  10:00 am - 4:30 pm Day 1: Back-End Engineering You'll learn the basics of Ruby. This popular programming language is used to build web applications and write back-end code. By the end of the day, you'll have built your very own program to post tweets and read timelines from Twitter. Day 2: Front-End Engineering On the second day, you'll learn the basics of front-end engineering. We'll cover HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We'll cover how to create, style, and add interactivity to web pages. Why Me, Why Now?Because you have nothing to lose! You can learn in a supportive environment, surrounded by other people who don’t have much experience but still share an interest in programming. Nuts & Bolts9:40 a.m. - Arrival time, check-in, coffee available. 10 a.m. - Start time - we’ll dive into the curriculum and work until about 12 p.m. when we break for lunch, which will feature a Q&A with Turing current students and alumni.After lunch we'll pick up where we let off and work until 3:45 p.m.3:45 p.m. - We'll talk about next steps to keep learning and look at how to become a student at Turing.4 p.m. - Wrap up, we'll be done with full group instruction and available for 1-on-1 questions about programming, life at the Turing School and anything else. 4:30 - doors close.Save on tuition!​Anyone who attends the workshop and is later accepted to the Turing School will save $500 on tuition. FAQ1. Do I need to bring a computer?You will need a computer for this class. It does not matter what the operating system is as long as you are able to access the internet through a browser. However, if you do not have one, a limited number of loaner computers are available for the class. Email Ramiro at ramiro@turing.io if you need to reserve a loaner.2. Where do I park?The attached garage to the building is $7 on weekends, and meters are free on Sundays.3. Is the space accessible?Yes, we have an elevator to our space and all classrooms are accessible.4. I want to attend but I can't afford it. Are there any scholarships available?We are offering scholarships on a limited basis for students with financial need. Please contact erin@turing.io for more information.5. When should I arrive on Saturday?Please arrive by 9:40 on Saturday morning to register and get settled.7. Are kids welcome?Generally people high-school age or older can keep up with the class and are very much invited. Unfortunately, the venue does not have enough space for child care, so younger ones will need to spend their Saturday somewhere else.8. I’ve already practiced some code as a hobby or through Codecademy - will I still benefit from this course? Answer hereThis course is designed for people who are brand new to code and have never tried it before. That doesn’t mean that those with some experience aren’t welcome or will not benefit from it, but some parts may be a review. What is the refund policy?If for any reason you can’t make it to the event, tickets are refundable up to 24 hours before. *Cancellation of events are dependent on a variety of factors including registrations, inclement weather and pressing needs that come up.
