Wetland/Riparian Plants of the Front Range - Thurs., August 15; 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Immerse yourself in a tour of the marshes and stream sides of this suburban open space park to discover Colorado rushes, sedges, grasses and shrubs of the Front Range. We will cover a lot of plants in a short time, as well as discuss both successes and lessons learned in wetland and riparian management and restoration. There is a 3-session version of this course that qualifies for certification credit and provides a more in-depth discussion with these plants. You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants. Trainer: Skot Latona is the Supervisor of South Platte Park and a Certified Interpretive Guide and Trainer. He has worked at South Platte Park since 1998. Beth Hanson served as the Education Manager at Hudson Gardens and has been a Naturalist at South Platte since 2005. Prerequisite: Basic Botany Class is recommended for those who would like to refresh their botanical knowledge and is required for those who have minimal background in botany. What to bring: Textbook, pencil, hand lens (approximately 10x), daypack, water, sack lunch, snack, rain gear, sun and wind protection, personal items you will need on the trail where there are no restrooms, etc. As we will be in and around water, remember to bring the bug spray and sun screen. The textbook and hand lens can be purchased through the Colorado Native Plant Society at https://conps.org/conps-store/ or any on-line or local area bookstore or scientific supply store. What to wear: Due to the damage that a group of students can create in wet soil conditions, much of this course is taught from the wetland fringe where you are more likely to encounter cheat grass seeds than to wade in water. Sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground for several miles, that can also potentially get muddy, are best. Sandals, rubber boots, waders are discouraged. Mosquitoes may be present so cover up or bring repellent. Prepare for hot and humid temperatures by dressing in layers and having a large-brimmed hat.
